Calvin Goldman is the Chair of the Competition Group at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. He resides in Toronto, Canada. A substantial portion of Cal’s practice involves trans-border mergers and cartel cases. Cal has been recognized as a pre-eminent competition lawyer both in Canada and abroad. Most recently, he was recognized as a “star individual” for competition law in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Cal is also identified in Law Business Research’s The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers as one of the 16 most highly regarded competition lawyers in the world, and he was named one of the world's top 25 competition and antitrust lawyers in Legal Media Group's The Best of the Best 2006.
Cal obtained an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School (1973 gold medallist) and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School (1974). Cal began his professional career at Blakes in 1976 after he clerked for Justice Spence of the Supreme Court of Canada. He remained with the firm specializing in antitrust litigation until 1986 when he was appointed Director (since renamed “Commissioner”) of the Competition Bureau in the Canadian Government.
Cal maintains a very active role in several professional organizations. He now holds or has held the positions of:
- Chair of the Task Force on Competition and International Trade, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)
- Vice-Chair of the Competition Committee, Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) to the OECD
- Non-U.S. Lawyer Representative to the Council, American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Antitrust Law
- President of the Harvard Law School Association of Toronto
- Member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee of Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto
- Honorary Legal Counsel, Canadian Jewish Congress
- Since 1995, appointed by the Canadian Government to the roster of panellists for bi-national dispute resolution under the North American Free Trade Agreement
- Appointed to the Honorary Board of Directors of the Public Policy Forum
- Past Chair of the International Task Force, ABA Section of Antitrust Law
- Past Chair of the National Competition Law Section, Canadian Bar Association (CBA)
- First appointee to the Soloway Chair of Business and Trade Law, University of Ottawa
Cal has published extensively and spoken widely in Canada, the United States, Europe and a number of countries in Asia on the subjects of competition law, trade practices and the interface between competition policy and trade policy. In this regard, he has been a speaker at various antitrust/competition policy programs organized by the ABA, the CBA, the IBA, the Canadian Competition Bureau, The World Bank, the WTO, BIAC, UNCTAD, the Conference Board and the Fordham Corporate Law Institute, among other organizations.
